It is an outstanding feature of cultural life in the city and the metropolitan region. The Opera House, the Art Nouveau pearl on the Old Town ring road, is among the most beautiful theater buildings in Germany and along with the Playhouse, with its clear glass facade and three modern stages, represents the cultural beacon at Richard-Wagner square.
The State Theater presents many new works, premieres and first performances in all the disciplines, but also a number of great classics and rarities, staged by internationally active directors and high-caliber ensembles. A further distinction was bestowed upon the theater recently when the orchestra was appointed the Nuremberg State Philharmonic Orchestra; it regularly performs in its own concert series in the Meistersinger Hall.

5 things, you should know about.1. Since 2005, the Nuremberg State Theater has been the fourth official state theater in Bavaria – in addition to three in Munich.
2. The opera house, which was built in 1905 as the “New City Theater on the Ring”, was the most expensive in Europe at the time.
3. With the opera "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg", Richard Wagner gave the city a unique place in the history of musical theater. The city thanked the composer by naming the square in front of the opera house after him. The State Theater’s address is therefore Richard-Wagner-Platz.
4. The international singing competition "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" takes place every two years in the opera house.
5. The orchestra of the State Theater, the State Philharmonic of Nuremberg, has its own concert series in the Meistersingerhalle.

Nuremberg’s theatre tradition, which reached its first peak with Hans Sachs in the 16th Century, goes back to the time of the Middle Ages. In 1833, a theatre in the Lorenzer Platz opened, seating 1000.
Since 2008/2009 season, Spanish dancer and choreographer Goyo Montero, who had been the first senior solo dancer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, arrived as the new ballet director at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. With him a new and exciting era began for ballet in Nuremberg, as well as for the audience, who like the press have welcomed his work with great enthusiasm.
