Altmühl Valley: Hiking between Romans and Dinosaurs

Pause, relax and find your own pace: In the Altmühl Valley Nature Park hikers are surrounded by rugged dolomite cliffs, sun-filled juniper meadows, pleasant river valleys and plenty of forest.

And with them a cultural landscape steeped in history: Mighty ramparts, reconstructed forts and spectacular archeological treasures are witnesses to the time of the Celts and Romans. Nobel families erected castles and palaces; prince bishops built magnificent churches and abbeys. In the Platy limestone of the western Altmühl Valley, many dinosaurs have immortalized themselves as fossils in the stone. In the valley’s many museums, the treasures of the past are presented to visitors. Some quarries are open to visitors and are ideal terrain for amateur paleontologists and fossil seekers.
