Nuremberg Bratwurst: Traditionally on Pewter Plates

In the classic bratwurst kitchens of Nuremberg, you won’t receive your Nuremberg sausages in a bun, but served on a pewter plate – some are heart-shaped – with sauerkraut or potato salad.

A rustic "brown bread" as a side dish is a must. How did this become tradition? In the era of Romanticism, artists and scholars visited Nuremberg, idealizing the city – and also eating sausages. It was at this time that the “age-old” tradition of serving Nuremberg bratwurst on pewter plates came into being.
