Every autumn, the Nuremberg Old Town Festival draws guests to the Insel Schütt and Hans-Sachs Square. At both locations, stands, tables and an outdoor stage invite you to sit back and relax. The tradition-filled event is one of the most important festivals in Franconia. It celebrates local traditions and regional food. Franconian autumn specialties such as onion tart and newly-pressed wine can be enjoyed at almost every booth of the Old Town Festival. There’s no better way to experience deeply rooted Franconian tradition.
Entertainment galore at the Old Town Festival
The Old Town Festival lasts two weeks: Traditionally, it is opened by the Lord Mayor tapping the first keg of beer on the main stage. A brass band starts the event off right. The whole family can then enjoy music, food and rides for the children. At the nearby Katharinenkloster, concerts round out the program and on the main market square you’ll find the Nuremberg Autumn Market with art and crafts and traditional culinary delights.
Fishermen’s Joust on the River Pegnitz
Since the Middle Ages, the River Pegnitz has been a source of fish for the citizens of Nuremberg. It was common among the fishermen to imitate their betters by jousting in boats on the River Pegnitz. This tradition is brought to life again during the Old Town Festival. The Fischerstechen is a real highlight and fun for both participants (one always gets soaked!) and spectators.
