Sustainability at the Christkindlesmarkt
Besides traditional products sold at the Christkindlesmarkt, which are handmade and from the region, the focus is also put on environmental protection measures. The booths for example are made by spruce wood and used as long as possible, some of them date back to 1890.
The city of Nuremberg has also opted for sustainability and as early as 2008 changed to CO2-free green electricity from N-ERGIE. The electricity comes mainly from regional hydroelectric power stations and photovoltaic systems.
Another way to save energy is the returnable-cup-system set up by the merchants. This system saves energy and avoids the use of disposable tableware.
The Organic Metropolis Nuremberg was the first German city to join the “Città del BIO” network (in December 2006) and since then supports organic companies and food producers.
"Original Regional" from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region
The partners in the regional campaign "Original Regional" guarantee that the production of their products takes place predominately in the Nuremberg metropolitan region. Eighty percent of the raw materials should – if available – come from the region. The producers also consciously abstain from the use of genetic engineering and dumping prices.
You'll find the booths of "Original Regional" tucked at the niches of St. Sebald Church. Here you can enjoy specialties like hot mulled wine, teas, liquors, fruits, sausages, biscuits and buy beautiful handmade wool products, soaps and candles.
