January 21, 2025: Tourism is a strong economic factor for Nuremberg

Tourism is an important pillar of Nuremberg's economy: with gross revenues of €2.36 billion, it supports Nuremberg's hotel, restaurant, retail, and service industries. This is confirmed by the study “Tourism as an economic factor for the city of Nuremberg 2023” conducted by Consulting GmbH of the Economic Institute for Tourism (dwif), which is compiled every three years on behalf of the Congress and Tourism Center Nuremberg (CTZ).

Overall, tourism generates income of €1.08 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 13 percent compared to 2019. Statistically, this represents a 6.6 percent share of Nuremberg's primary income.

Nuremberg's Head of Economic and Scientific Affairs, Dr. Andrea Heilmaier, comments: “The study results prove the outstanding importance of tourism for Nuremberg. Statistically speaking, more than 34,000 people in Nuremberg make their living from tourism. These jobs are primarily characterized by their strong location-specific nature. Investments in tourism should therefore be understood as direct investments in Nuremberg as a business location.”

Since tourism is a classic cross-sector industry, virtually all economic sectors in the region benefit, albeit to varying degrees. Overall, gross sales in 2023 rose by 11.6 percent compared to 2019. Of the sectors specifically examined in the study, the hospitality industry (€1.02 billion), retail (€863.2 million), and the service industry benefited particularly. The increase in revenue was particularly large in the hospitality industry (+17.3 percent).

Yvonne Coulin, Managing Director of CTZ, emphasizes: "The results of the current study highlight how crucial tourism is for Nuremberg. With over 3.6 million overnight stays in total in 2023 and 40 million day trips, the industry generates €2.36 billion in revenue. Through targeted marketing and sustainable tourism offerings, we will continue this positive trend and further position Nuremberg as an attractive destination for guests from all over the world."

With 40 million day trips, day trippers represent the largest guest group and are particularly important for Nuremberg. In 2023, they generated €1.58 billion in revenue, contributing around 67 percent of total tourism revenue. On average, day trippers or tourists who stay with friends and relatives spend 39.50 euros per day in Nuremberg. Guests who stay in accommodation spend an average of 197.50 euros per day in Nuremberg.

As a scientific partner of CTZ, dwif has been regularly collecting and evaluating data relevant to tourism in Nuremberg since 2010. Moritz Sporer, managing director of dwif-Consulting GmbH, summarizes the study results as follows: "The excellent tourism results show how resilient the industry is in times of omnicrisis and how strong tourism is as an economic factor in Nuremberg. As a major driver of tourism in Franconia, Nuremberg generates more than a fifth of regional revenue. The positive development of Nuremberg's tourism industry is thus also providing important impetus for growth and innovation within the region."

Approximately two percent of the €219.4 million in revenue generated by tourism in Nuremberg through value-added tax and income tax remains in Nuremberg. In addition, tourism generates additional revenue for the city budget through property tax and trade tax, among other things.
