The Zeppelin Field and Zeppelin Grandstand are the only structures on the former Nazi party rally grounds that were planned, completed and used during the Third Reich and are still largely intact today. The entire complex was built between 1935 and 1937. The facility could accommodate up to 320,000 people, including 70,000 spectators in the grandstand and on the ramparts. After 1945, the Americans took over the site and destroyed large parts of the grandstand. The Zeppelin Field was used by US soldiers as a sports field and concert venue.
The site, which is currently used for events such as Rock im Park and the DTM car race, is to be developed into a place of learning and encounter in the coming years. By 2030, the Zeppelin site and the Zeppelin grandstand, including the interior, are to be made accessible to the public. Exhibition areas within the grandstand will provide information about its history, and the reception hall with its golden mosaics will also be opened to visitors.
