Nuremberg - Home of "Rotbier"

Nuremberg likes to call itself the "Home of Rotbier" although no one is certain if it was really someone from Nuremberg or a Belgian who first brewed a red beer. In Nuremberg, the original Nuremberg red beer has been brewed according to local brewing regulations since the Middle Ages. The special type of beer is bottom-fermented - slowly and at low temperatures.

The yeast then falls to the bottom of the kettle. Since 1530, a top-fermented "white beer" has also been brewed here. For top-fremented beer, temperatures between 15 and 20 °C are required and the yeast swims on the upper surface. In 1597 in Nuremberg there were 35 red beer and 11 white beer breweries and a city-run wheat beer brew house.

Later, the number of breweries was reduced by law. Today, you can enjoy the original Nuremberg red beer in the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof, which was the first to brew this type of beer again. In the meantime, other breweries have begun producing red beer. Don't miss your chance to try this typical Nuremberg specialty, because you can find lighter beers everywhere else, but red beer can only be enjoyed in Nuremberg!
