The beer assortment of the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof ties tradition to innovation
At the Nuremberg Hausbrauerei Altstadthof, connoisseurs of select organic beers, gourmets and whisky fans can all find something to enjoy. In the brewery's own brew pub, restaurant and beer garden, the Engel family spoils their guests with delicacies from kitchen and cellar. These taste best after a tour of the historical rock-cut cellars, which were hacked out of the sandstone beneath Nuremberg's Old Town, so that the historical "rot beer" could properly ripen.
The perfect souvenir from the town of Albrecht Dürer isn't a plastic rabbit: A real Nuremberg original such as our Nuremberg rot beer will receive much more approval. And the best whisky in Germany today will most certainly be greeted with unchecked enthusiasm.
The extensive product range of the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof reflects the ingenuity and enthusiasm with which the brew masters approach their work. The historical Nuremberg city beer - rot beer - is the most important and popular brew and is held in high esteem together with the experimentation of the brew masters. For example, in 2015 a "winter warmer" was served for the first time at the Christkindlesmarkt. This beer - brewed from hops, malt and spices - gave the traditional favorite mulled wine a run for its money. This great success confirms the Nuremberg Hausbrauerei's course of innovation.
The Hausbrauerei Altstadthof also stays true to its roots as the first 100%-ecological brewery in Germany: Since 1984, beer has been brewed only with natural hops and malt grown to an organic standard, in copper kettles and wooden fermenting vats using artisan skills and their own recipes: Principals which are known today as craft brewing.
The history of the property reaches back to 1386. That is the year in which the former Vierseithof at Bergstraße 19 was first mentioned in a document. Until 1568, the owner was named Jacob Ayrer. Today, the products of the in-house whisky distillery bear his name. The entrance was via today's Albrecht-Dürer-Straße. That is where the brewery and the "Rote Bräuhaus" which was working until 1905, was located. With a renovation and development of a new concept for the property from 1980 to 1984, the area was named the Nuremberg Altstadthof.
"Helles" beer, dark beer, red wheat beer - together with seasonal highlights such as "Easter Gold", May bock beer and a summer beer, there's hardly a type of beer that you can't find at the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof! You can enjoy the beer specialty of your choice with a hearty and delicious treat prepared fresh and with regional ingredients in the brew pub of the Altstadthof with its 40 seats, in the in-house restaurant (ca. 90 seats), in the beer garden or in the cellar bar Schmelztiegel, which has attracted young people since 1976 with a successful mix of excellent beers, music and a party atmosphere.
For your at-home enjoyment, all beer are available freshly tapped in a traditonal 1-liter swing-top bottle along with many other beer treats in the brewery shop or online. Beer tours through the historical rock-cut cellars are especially attractive for beer fans, particularly when combined with a beer tasting in the "Pro BIER" boutique of ther Nuremberg Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. Here, one can try both in-house products and beer from around the world.
