Mit guter Sicherheit ist anzunehmen, dass um das 5. oder 7. Jahrhundert Hopfen in Mitteleuropa kultiviert wurde. Es waren vor allem die Klöster und Königshöfe, die das Wissen um die Vorzüge des Hopfens verbreiteten. Durch das entstehen eines lokalen Braugewerbes - neben den Hausbrauereien - verbreitete sich die Hopfenkultivierung über ganz Mitteleuropa.
