Films from genres such as anime or black comedy are also screened. The Fantasy Filmfest is one of the most important festivals in this genre worldwide.
The Fantasy Filmfest was founded in 1987 in Hamburg. In the first year, film classics and premiers were shown in the Alabama cinema and the Markthalle.
Today, the festival takes place in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Stuttgart and Nuremberg. Each year around 70 films are screened parallel in the participating cities.
The main program “Selected Features” shows current genre and independent films from Europe and America. Other firmly established programs are Focus Asia (genre films from the pan-Asian region), Midnight Madness (midnight screenings for extreme, bizarre trash, splatter and horror films) and Get Shorty (Shorts program). Since 2006, there has been a public prize for films from the competition series Fresh Blood (debut or second films from directors).
