Nuremberg’s oldest town church dates back to approx 1215. In 1230 construction of the present day church began with a double quire and a basilica in the late Romanesque style. In 1361 an imposing Gothic triple quire was built replacing parts of the transept and the original quire. During the Second World War the church along with much of the city was destroyed. Following the war the church was carefully restored and in 1957 St Sebald once again opened its doors to worshipers. The extremely interesting carvings and sculptures adorning the churches north eastern buttresses like the “Schreyer-Landauer'sche Grabmal” from Adam Kraft. On the north side of the Sebalder Platz looking towards the castle the entrance to the north tower is decorated with an Advents scene from Heinz Heiber. Inside the Church are the remains of prominent citizens in reliquary caskets dating back to 1397. The imposing 4.17 metre high tomb built by the artist Peter Vischer and his son for St Sebald is cast in bronze. Housed in a silver covered Sark are the remains of Nuremberg’s Saint Sebald who died in 1070 and in 1425 was proclaimed a saint. The west quire, crypt and tower are accessible by prior arrangement.
