The Christkindlesmarkt: the most famous Christmas Market in the world

November 29 - December  24, 2013

The Nuremberg Christmas Market is one of the oldest, and certainly the most famous, Christmas markets in the world. In the wooden booths of the “little town made of wood and cloth“ you can find traditional, often hand-crafted Christmas decorations and sweet treats such as gingerbread almond cookies. The Children's Christmas Market, the Sternenhaus, the Market of the twin towns and a lantern procession of Nuremberg children are some additional attractions.

Gingerbread and mulled wine are also part of the Nuremberg Christmas Market

“You men and women who once were children,  be young again“, proclaims the "Christkind" when she welcomes guests to the Nuremberg Market Square for the opening of the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt. And she is right, because with a bit of childish enthusiasm over the Christmas tree decorations, tinsel angels, wooden nutcrackers, cribs and colored stars, you enjoy walking through the romantically lit Christmas Market twice as much.

Christmas City and the Sternenhaus for children

A Christmas city for children has been constructed at the Hans-Sachs-Platz. Visitors can bake cookies during the Children's Christmas or paint glasses, write a Christmas wish list to the 'Christkind' or ride on the roundabouts and the big wheel at the nostalgic fairground. The Sternenhaus in the freshly renovated Heilig-Geist-Saal offers a colourful programme of culture and storytelling all-around the Christmas Market.

The Market of the twin towns at the Christmas Market

Nuremberg is twinned with 13 cities, and has links of friendship with eight other municipalities. At the Rathausplatz to the north of the Market Square they bring an international flair to Nuremberg every year during the Christmas Market. The proceeds from sales of often home-made Christmas decorations go to charity organizations in the twin towns.

Our tip: tinsel angel

For a traditionalist, the famous Nuremberg tinsel angel does not belong on the mantelpiece, but on the top of the Christmas tree. It is folded from paper or metal foil and folds its arms unter the top of its colourful robes. But luckily...[more]
