Nature and Surrounding

Romanticism, unspoilt nature and highbrow culture in Franconia

The old privy councillor Goethe was “quite grumpy“ if his favourite wine was not brought to his table. But the Franconian Silvaner, with its typical aroma, is perhaps not the only reason why you should take a trip from Nuremberg to experience art, culture, nature or culinary delights.

Switzerland lies just behind Nuremberg

Each of the Franconian cities (German) of Würzburg, Coburg, Ansbach, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl, Bayreuth, the old town ensemble of Bamberg, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, and of course Rothenburg ob der Tauber with its narrow cobbled alleyways, half-timbered houses and completely intact city walls, are enchanting in their own particular way and with their own special charm and precious cultural treasures.

Romantic Franconia is also, however, a mecca for Nature lovers and enthusiastic cyclists, climbers and canoeists. Not an hour's car journey from Nuremberg, the visitor to Franconian and Hersbruck Switzerland can discover impressive rock formations, clear rivers, extensive forests, old castles, idyllic villages, and of course Franconian beer. There are some 300 breweries in Franconia, and many of them have their own restaurants in which specialities of Franconian cuisine are served up with the house beer. And this consists of much more than fried sausages and sauerkraut. Whoever has tried fresh asparagus with ham in bread dough in the spring, or a Franconian carp in the autumn, will keep enjoying coming back to Franconia.

For watersport enthusiasts, by the way, we have a very special tip: the Fränkische Seenland (German) with its five lakes has now become one of the tourist highlights in Franconia.
